If you’ve spent any amount of time researching white noise machines, you may have come across the Yogasleep Dohm UNO White Noise Machine. It is one of the most popular white noise machines on the market and actually many people claim that it is the absolute original sound machine. Formerly Marpac, Yogasleep has been making this machine since the 1960s with generations of happy parents and children sleepers to back up the fact that they are the experts in their field. But what makes the Dohm UNO stand out from the crowd? What does it have that other sound machines do not.
Buckle up, because this machine is actually the sound machine of my choice if I could only choose one. And I’ll tell you why.
Yogasleep Dohm Uno Has “Natural” Sound
The Yogasleep Dohm UNO white noise machine stands out from the rest of the white noise machines in one major way. It uses an authentic fan to get the perfect white noise sound for sleepers. Honestly, this is all I have ever wanted in a white noise machine.
Doesn’t Affect Temperature
I love sleeping with a fan on, but it doesn’t always make sense because sometimes it’s literally freezing outside and I have a fan running. It seems like a huge waste of energy. I want a fan noise but I don’t want the actual cool air from a fan. But I have never–let me say that again–never found any white noise machine that had an actual fan.
Sure, there are some that have several different fan options to choose from. There are also many people who claim that their sounds don’t loop. This actually isn’t true. The loop might be so long that you don’t notice it easily and there may be a seamless gap from the end to the beginning of the loop so it’s difficult to notice, but they all have a loop. After a while, you might even start to notice it and when you notice the loop then your brain anticipates it, and then it becomes difficult to fall asleep again.
However, if you have a real fan blowing (although it isn’t producing any blowing air to cool the room down) there are no loops, just pure, natural white noise. And this, my friends, is the kind of noise that will help you sleep at night.
So although this white noise machine doesn’t come with a million bells and whistles, it still has one adjustment you can make. You can’t switch through different song tracks and you can’t adjust the volume digitally or with a dial. You can’t set a timer for the white noise machine to turn off. But here’s what you can do:
You can adjust the machine to produce the perfect, natural fan noise and volume by spinning the outer case, which causes the vent holes to be bigger or smaller depending on the adjustment. This will allow more air to escape and produce a louder noise or less air to escape and produce a quieter noise. The depth of the noise changes too.
It is literally this simple to adjust to your liking. And the great thing about it is that it is so easy and doesn’t require any technology to be that easy. Many sound machine reviews will rave about the memory feature in the white noise machine. Don’t get me wrong, I have raved about it myself and I love this feature. But it’s so funny to me that this simple white noise machine also has this feature just because you have to manually change it with your hands. It will always be on the setting that you left it at because there is nothing to digitally mess with.
There is a wide variety of different plug-in options that white noise machines have. Some are completely portable and just need to be charged, others need to be plugged in all the time, still, more have the option of a USB plug-in.
The Yogasleep Dohm UNO white noise machine is not a portable unit. It does need to be plugged in all the time, but it does have one feature that I appreciate in the plug. The cord is 6 feet long, which is the longest cord of any of the white noise machines that I have reviewed. I appreciate that you don’t have to have it right next to an outlet because I would prefer to have it as close to me as possible without putting it in my actual bed, and this isn’t always convenient with the available plugs.
It’s also nice for having in a nursery since it’s something I wouldn’t want my babies playing with and I’d rather have it up high on a shelf.
The Yogasleep Dohm Uno is quite a bit bigger than the other white noise machines that I’ve reviewed and is apparent why. The digital sound machines require a good speaker and a microchip for the sounds, where this machine needs to house a fan that is loud enough to mask the spikes in noise.
Where the digital sound machines were about the size of a small jewelry box, this machine is 6 inches by 6 inches. It is about double the size of one of the other options out there. It isn’t travel-friendly anyway, since it always needs to be plugged in, so the size might not matter as much to you as it might to someone who is looking for a portable noise machine. Yogasleep does have some portable, digital options on their website, but they will not have the natural sound that you are looking for.
Another thing that parents love when it comes to the Yogasleep Dohm UNO white noise machine is that it is very affordable. It can be because it doesn’t have all the fancy digital things that might come in a more techy noise machine.
There are actually a few models of sound machines that Yogasleep puts out, and though this one is the most popular, it isn’t the highest priced. There are some travel-sized sound machines that are digital like the other ones I have reviewed on this site, but of the “natural” sound machines, there are two different options. The other one is the Classic Natural Sound Machine and it comes in all kinds of colors.
The only difference is that the Classic Natural Sound Machine has an extra speed setting that the UNO does not. The UNO has one speed, though you can adjust the sound that it puts out by spinning the vents.
You can see the classic model in the video below:
The Classic still has the spinning sides with the vents to adjust the sound of the fan, but there is an option of a faster fan that will produce a slightly louder noise.
When it comes to white noise that I personally enjoy, less is more. I mentioned how thrilled I was at the prospect of having four fan noises to choose from in the post that I wrote about the Elesories Sound Machine, but the Yogasleep Dohm UNO actually has them beat. Yes, four fan noises are great options, but they just can’t compete with the real thing.
One thing that I especially like about this noise machine is that it is very sturdy on a surface. It won’t slide around because it has some rubber-coated feet to stand on. This might seem like an important feature, but whenever you have something in your baby’s room that potentially could fall from a baby pulling on the cord, it is best to have a sturdy machine that won’t slide around. Of course, the best option is to have the cord covered by the furniture surface that it is sitting on, but this is an extra measure of safety.
The design may be simple, but there are still a few different options to choose from that will work in any room. The Dohm UNO comes in pink, white, and charcoal. There are a few other options on their own website, but most of them stay within this color palette, switching the color of the button, etc.
There is definitely a certain section of the population that will find the Yogasleep Dohm UNO White Noise Machine as the best out there, and I’ll admit, I’m part of that population. For people who are very sensitive to sounds, especially while they are trying to sleep, this is the absolute only option I would even consider. There is a high-pitched frequency that comes from recordings of sounds and it is pretty obvious to sensitive ears. So the natural sound that comes from the Yogasleep Dohm is one of a kind and an answer to many people’s prayers who have a hard time sleeping.
Many babies might not have issues with other sound machines, but if your baby isn’t responding well to a digital sound machine, it is worth giving this one a try.
